At the age of just 24, and with the best years of his tennis career still hopefully to come, it might be thought a little early for Roger Federer's biography to appear, particularly when other greats of the game like Stefan Edberg have never had their life stories published. But Federer is different, as we all know. He is tennis's Special One, and with six grand slam titles and a plethora of other achievements already to his credit, it is right and proper that an experienced tennis journalist should be the one to tell the story of Federer's life to date. Chris Bowers has taken on the task and he has done a great job, providing plenty of background but always keeping the main focus on the tennis, a refreshing change in these days of tabloid sensationalism where off-court antics might be thought likely to sell more books. Bowers takes the reader through the great one's early life in Basel, noting that he first picked up a tennis racquet at just three years of age before going on to become a talented if somewhat temperamental member of the Swiss junior training academy. Year by year we are taken through Federer's steps on a gradual path to his current pre-eminence, and it is refreshing to read the author's informed views about pivotal matches, early rivalries, and relationships with family, friends and coaches. The key moment, well known to British fans, was Federer's defeat of Pete Sampras at Wimbledon 2001. That was really the start of the Federer era, although it would take a further two years for him to capture his first grand slam title on the lawns of SW19. The book brings the Federer story right up to date, with his blossoming rivalry with Rafael Nadal in the early tournaments of 2006. Although this is not an official biography, it contains contributions from the Federer family and some input from Roger himself. A thoroughly enjoyable read for followers of contemporary tennis.
