Pages: 256
Condition: NEW
Binding: Hardback

The new edition of this excellent coffee table book telling the story of the Centre Court in words and breathtaking photographs. There is an excellent new 16 page section covering the Centre Court roof grand opening day on 17 May 2009, plus photographs of the stadium during Andy Murray's historic match with Stanislas Wawrinka, the Wimbledon Championships' first ever indoor match. John Barrett, doyen of Wimbledon historians, and fellow AELTC committee-member Ian Hewitt have gathered together archive photographs covering eighty-eight years of Centre Court action since its opening in 1922, and produced reports of 38 pivotal matches staged there, including the legendary 1933 final between Jack Crawford and Ellsworth Vines, Bjorn Borg’s epic semi-final against Vitas Gerulaitis in 1977 and the classic 2008 final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal which many observers believe to be Wimbledon’s finest ever match. The book has sections on the original construction of the Centre Court under the supervision of architect Captain Stanley Peach, the care and maintenance of the world’s most famous grass tennis court, TV broadcasting over the years, the Royal Box and, of course, the six-year project to design and build the new retractable roof. Add profiles of great champions including Suzanne Lenglen, Fred Perry, Maria Bueno, Rod Laver, Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe, and beautiful illustrations of Centre Court treasures from the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, and you have a volume that is itself a treasure of Wimbledon.
